Welcome to another bookish DIY Friday here at A Little Blue Book!
Today I am tackling a (1st world) problem which many bookworms struggle with: choosing a book from their often massive to-be-read (TBR) pile! The struggle is real, and I often just look at my pile, torn between 7 different books that I want to read asap.
Luckily I have found THE perfect (and most ridiculous) solution! I present ‘A Little Blue Book’s TBR Pile Decider’! Yours for only $99.99.
Just kidding 😜
This fairly-easy-to-make device will end the struggle to choose your next read because it will decide for you! How great is that?! It’s all in fate’s hands (which technically is your hands… anyway) so you will know that it is meant to be!
Seriously, though. If anyone wants to buy mine for $99.99, you totally can. I might even include shipping costs for that price – maybe…
What you need:
- Book pages
- Pair of scissors
- Colourful pencils
- Coffee/tea (optional as always but highly recommended)
The best thing about these TBR Pile Deciders is that they don’t require a lot of materials. You will probably have most of these things already, and if you don’t, they can be bought pretty much anywhere.
How to do it:
The TBR Pile Decider can be a bit tricky to make as it requires quite a bit of paper folding – however, I’ve taken a tonne of images that clearly show every step, so no worries! Besides, this isn’t master origami, so everyone can join in. Just follow the few, simple steps below and you will never struggle to pick a book from your TBR pile again!
The first thing you will need to do is fold the book page so that you get a square. It works best if you use a page where one side is more or less blank – these can usually be found at the end of a chapter. Then you cut off the extra bit at the end.
Then you fold the paper on the other angle so that you have a cross on your square.
Next, you fold one of the corners into the middle of the cross, making sure that the blank side of the paper is facing down. Then you fold the next corner into the middle and continue to do this on all the corners.
Now you flip the paper so that the blank side is facing up.
Then you again fold one corner into the middle of the square and continue to do this to the three other corners.
Then you fold the bottom part of the square onto the top half of the square and press down. Folding the bottom part down again, you then fold the right side of the square onto the left side of the square – and back again. This makes the TBR Pile Decider more limber!
Then you fold the little flaps on the underside up and gently press the TBR Pile Decider into shape.
Next, you colour the four squares with their own unique colour.
The last step is to open your decider and mark the inside flaps with a number – I’ve used 1-8. Then you open each flap and write a book title from your TBR pile underneath each number.
And there you go! One amazing TBR Pile Decider!
So you may already know how these things work, but in case you don’t, the rules are as follows:
- Pick one of the four colours and move the TBR Pile Decider according to the number of letters in that colour e.g. RED = 3 moves.
- Then you pick a number and move the decider according to that number e.g. 5 = 5 moves.
- Then you chose a new number and repeat the step above.
- Then you pick your final number and lift the flap of that to see which book title is hidden underneath – and that’s your next read!
