Bookworms may sometimes seem like a different species if you’re not into books. We have our own language filled with TBR piles, reading slump, book haul and book hangovers. Sometimes it even sounds like we’re talking in code when we’re referring to our favourite books (e.g. lotr, acol and acotar). And if you’re not a bookworm, you would also be forgiven for not understanding our unique compliments – they can be quite obscure if you’re not familiar with our rich book culture.
However, if you’re not sure if a bookworm just gave you a compliment or insulted you, despair not! I present to you: ‘A Little Blue Book’s Almost Ultimate Guide to Bookworm Compliments’!
Below I’ve listed 8 small compliments which will give you an indication of what a bookworm MAY say to you if they like you. Of course, the list works the other way around too, so if you want to return the compliment, feel free to use any of the ones below!
Caution: compliments should be used with caution as bookworms may become so excited about your reference to a particular book/character that they will try to start an in-depth conversation about it. Proceed with caution if you are not familiar with the books mentioned in the compliments below (having seen the movie(s) will only get you so far).
And everything should be taken with a pinch of salt, of course, as some bookworms will just tell it as it is – but where’s the fun in that!?

Translation: You are smart/ You are a Bulgarian Quidditch prodigy
