10 Harry Potter quotes that perfectly sum up a typical Monday

It’s Monday (surprise!), and while this may seem to be yet another unremarkable start to your week, Potter fans around the globe know otherwise. Today isn’t just another boring Monday – It’s Monday the 31st July!

To all the Muggles out there who aren’t in the know, today is Harry Potter’s birthday, which he also shares with his creator J. K. Rowling. So happy birthday to Harry and his mother!

To celebrate (whilst also acknowledging that for most of us, this will probably turn out to be a magic-less Monday – at least until we can get home and reread the HP books), I have compiled 10 quotes from the Harry Potter books that perfectly sum up a typical Monday – at least for some of us.

  1. “Dudley thought for a moment. It looked like hard work.”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

It’s Monday, and you just know that everything is going to be hard work – even gulping down that first life-saving cup of coffee/tea, which you desperately hope will awaken your hibernating brain so you can face the day (and actually remember what the colleague next to you is called).

  1. “Accio Firebolt!”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Sometimes Mondays just feel like a constant battle where you’re dodging problems left and right (though actual dragons at work are rare). Having a flying broom would make it so much easier to hide from your boss when (s)he expects you to magically produce a company report from thin air. Unfortunately, most of us are left to face the problems with just a stapler and sheer determination.

  1. “Chaos reigned.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Describes quite well the situation at my work every Monday.

  1. “Well, he should have some chocolate, at the very least.”
—J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Drained of energy and willpower (those eight cups of coffee/tea never kicked in), the person who happens to offer you chocolate on a Monday (or any other day really) becomes your new hero. This magical invention makes you forget for a tiny moment that you are fighting to keep your soul and happiness intact, despite your work trying its best to suck the life out of you like a starving dementor.

  1. “I hate being poor.”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Which is why most of us go to work every day, though Mondays have a special tendency to remind us of just how poor and miserable we are.

  1. “I’m going to keep going until I succeed — or die. Don’t think I don’t know how this might end. I’ve known it for years.”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Halfway through a Monday and we all know where this is going, but we have to keep going because we can’t afford not to.

  1. “I DON’T CARE!” Harry yelled at them, snatching up a lunascope and throwing it into the fireplace. “I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE!”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

General state of mind at 3pm on a Monday.

  1. “I’m dying!” Malfoy yelled, as the class panicked. “I’m dying, look at me! It’s killed me!”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

According to statistics, you are most likely to die of a heart attack on Mondays (nope, I’m not making this up – Google it!). Monday is a killer, and it is out to get you! It will suck all the energy and vitality out of you and leave behind an empty shell with a crushed heart.

10 Harry Potter quotes that perfectly sum up a typical Monday

  1. “Finally, the truth. Lying with his face pressed into the dusty carpet of the office where he had once thought he was learning the secrets of victory, Harry understood at last that he was not supposed to survive.”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

All the dreams you had when you started your job seem to have turned to dust on a Monday afternoon. The grand vision of you making a path worth travelling on your route to success has proven to be a dead end. There will be no victory. The secrets were all lies. You can’t even have a proper cup of coffee because they’ve run out of creamer…

  1. ¾ “It was not, after all, so easy to die.”
― J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

And even though you were sure that you wouldn’t survive another Monday at work, here you are (8-12 hours later) dragging your sorry self home to scrape enough energy together to come back tomorrow.

  1. But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

But it’s not all bad! At least you’re now one day closer to the weekend!

I hope this collection of excellent quotes (with some rather silly comments) managed to put a smile on your lips or even uplift your day just a little bit. If not, then at least the fact that you survived the day (and the weekend is one day closer) should!
